It's ON!

McCain will go to debate tonight

House Republicans undercut Bush rescue plan, slow talks

Lawmakers were meeting again today in Washington after some House Republicans, led by Virginia's Eric Cantor, said they wouldn't back a plan based on Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson's approach. A top Senate Republican said he is willing to delay any bailout package...

Dems seek another $56 billion

White House meeting:
McCain did not sandbag the Paulson deal...

Though Sen. Chris Dodd implied that Sen. McCain sandbagged the rest of the negotiators by bringing up alternative proposals, McCain himself did not bring up those proposals, according to four independent sources briefed by four different principals inside the meeting, including two Republicans and two Democrats.

"McCain has not attacked the Paulson deal," said a third Republican who was briefed by McCain directly.  "Unlike the [Democrats] in the [White House] meeting, he didn't raise his voice or cause a ruckus. He is urging all sides to come together."

... The fact is that Boehner doesn't have 100 votes from his conference -- 100 votes that Nancy Pelosi really wants. And that's not McCain's fault...

Couric 'jacked' video of McCain interview?

Letterman discovered the Senator sitting down with Couric at the same time he was supposed to be taping "Late Night"...

Letterman showed an internal, live video of McCain being tended to by a make-up artist before the Couric interview...

...Asked if CBS officials had a problem with Letterman using the internal news feed, a spokeswoman for "The Evening News" refused to address the issue.

But several CBS News executives - who asked not to be identified - said that the stunt did not go down well within the news division.

"If we had done something like that to him, someone around here would end up getting fired," one said.

John McCain & Sarah Palin... today's headlines with excerpts

Palin holds first press conference

Sarah Palin took questions from reporters for the first time since she became the GOP Vice-Presidential candidate today, after visiting the September 11th Tribute Center at Ground Zero.

According to a pool report, Palin was asked what she thought of the bailout package before Congress, “I don’t support that until the provisions that Senator McCain has offered are implemented in Paulson’s proposals.”

Palin said she supports the way President Bush has carried out the War on Terror, “I agree with the Bush administration that we take the fight to them. We never again let them come onto our soil and try to destroy not only our democracy, but communities like the community of New York. Never again. So yes, I do agree with taking the fight to the terrorists and stopping them over there.”

Palin skips fundraisers to work crowds

“It only makes sense that we would maximize her time and make sure the schedule lets her spend time meeting with voters, mobilizing volunteers and communicating her record,” said an aide to Palin, requesting anonymity to discuss strategic matters...

Barack Obama & Joe Biden... today's headlines with excerpts'

NYTimes: In a time of crisis, is Obama too cool?

However forceful and passionate Mr. Obama can be, his speeches and public appearances this week have underscored how he is sometimes out of sync with the visceral anger of Americans who are losing their jobs and homes. He often talks about growing up on food stamps and about having paid off his student loans only recently, yet his tone and volume, body language, facial expressions and words convey a certain distance from the ache that many voters feel.

“People want presidents who lead and relate to them — they don’t want presidents who analyze and seem above it all,” said G. Terry Madonna, a pollster and director of the Center for Politics and Public Affairs at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. “Obama still comes across as dispassionate to the point of coolness. He is so comfortable in his own skin, he can be hard to connect with for people who are struggling.”

Obama campaign: McCain's 'stunt'

Obama's camp, after sniping at McCain's "suspension," dismisses it this evening as a stunt
in a memo to the press:

So make no mistake: John McCain did not “suspend” his campaign. He just turned a national crisis into an occasion to promote his campaign. It’s become just another political stunt, aimed more at shoring up the Senator’s political fortunes than the nation’s economy. And it does nothing to help advance this critical legislation to protect the American people during this time of economic crisis...
