March 2003

Survey conducted by Research 2000 for KCCI-TV 3/10-3/12 indicates Gephardt (22%), Kerry (20%) and Lieberman (16%) are bunched together at head of Dem presidential pack. Edwards was fourth with 8%, followed by Dean (6%) and Sharpton (1%). KCCI said Graham, Clark, Moseley Braun and Kucinich all registered less than 1%. Twenty-seven percent were undecided. According to the KCCI website – www.TheIowaChannel.com -- 400 Democratic caucus voters were surveyed for presidential preferences…(3/15/2003)

General – and apparently perpetual unannounced Dem presidential wannabe (and CNN military analyst) -- Clark said on CNN last night he expects U. S. to be at war by end of week. (Iowa Pres Watch Note: At least Clark said something most of the announced candidates have trouble doing – saying something most Americans agree with.)(3/17/2003)

…When he surfaces before UAW members, Dean will be buoyed by latest New Hampshire survey showing he’s virtually tied with Kerry in battle of regional favorite sons. American Research Survey poll, conducted 3/16-3/19, indicates Dean gained 6 points over past month – although Kerry still leads with 23% to Dean’s 22%. Gephardt third (15%), Lieberman fourth (12%), 20% still undecided. Other Dem candidates in lowvery lowsingle digits with Edwards leading that group with 3%. (That’s right 3% -- but it’s better than the 0% received by Kucinich, Sharpton and Clark, who’s doubtlessly getting better numbers for his current gig as CNN military analyst.) Interesting sidebar: 99% of respondents wereawareof Hart, but he received only 2% on the ballot support question(3/22/2003)

War continues. Baghdad weather today – High 77, low 50, very loud and smoky…Overnight: At least one dead, investigation continues into incident involving a U. S. Army sergeant who apparently tossed grenades into command post for 101st Airborne at Camp Pennsylvania in Kuwait. TV screens around world, including Arab and European nations, tuned to live, lengthy U. S. Marine firefight and tank operation near port of Umm Qasr – wee hours (around 1 a.m., Iowa time) viewing for state’s insomniacs. CNN analyst, general and sometimes prospective Dem wannabe Wesley Clark says operation was “delicate, difficult and unpredictable” – adding “this is a slow, methodical reduction of this enemy position.” On site, Brit correspondent David Bowden said tanks will take building where apparent Iraqi resistance located “down brick-by-brick if necessary.” Best shot: Marine with camcorder getting video, probably for home movies(3/23/2003)

…Air war continues against Baghdad as bombs keep dropping, but U. S. TV viewers have opportunity to consider central question: How would Gen. Wesley Clark look in Oval Office? (Iowa Pres Watch Observation: Interesting, knowledgeable guy – but no way. The bottom line on Clark: Better at running a TV war than running a nation.)(8/30/2003)
