Hillary (& Bill) Clinton

excerpts from the Iowa Daily Report

official draft Hillary website:

April 2003

… From Chuck Muth’s News & Views: “Hillary Clinton has been leading the charge in Democrat attacks against the Bush administration for not, in their opinion, funding homeland security sufficiently. Mo’ money, mo’ money, mo’ money. So if we don’t have enough money for something as critically important as homeland security, in Madame Hillary’s opinion, then why is she sponsoring legislation to appropriate $1.2 million to fund a ‘historic trail’ of the women’s rights movement in New York? How does this support of radical feminism boost support for the first-responders she pretends to be so worried about?” (4/6/2003)

… Drudge Report says story “developing” about Hillary missing deadline to produce acompleted manuscript” for book deal she signed with Simon & Schuster about her days as First Lady. Report says she received a $2.85 million advance on book due next month (for August publication) – but the publisher hasn’t received a completed manuscript and the book doesn’t even have a title yet. (Iowa Press Watch Note: Nobody understands what the delay is, but Hillarys book would be a certain best-seller if she just includes two words – Monica Lewinsky.) (4/7/2003)

WHO Radio (Des Moines) farm broadcaster Gary Wergin says this morning Iowans – especially the state’s farmersshould question and challenge Dem presidential candidates on proposed Senate amendments aimed at watering down ethanol provisions in fed energy legislation. Wergin notes two senators – Hillary and CA Dem Boxer – have offered some 20 amendments, primarily to exclude their states (and other states) from the ethanol provisions of the bill. He noted that since Iowa is “awash in senators and governors” seeking the Dem presidential nomination, “you might want to ask them how they plan to vote on the Boxer and Clinton amendments?” Wergin also notes that ethanol supporters – the corn growers and renewable fuels groups – have issued strongly-worded statements opposing the amendments. Iowa Pres Watch Note: Anti-ethanol politicians normally don’t fare well in the IA caucuses. If there’s any doubt, check out John McCain’s adventure in the 2000 GOP caucuses. This year, in fact, Lieberman has already told IA reporters his position on ethanol tax credits is pretty much like McCain’s – and he doesn’t expect to win the 2004 Dem caucuses. (Iowa Presidential Watch, 4/10/2003)

From overnite email blast by NewsMax.com: “Sen. Hillary Clinton has always offended conservatives and moderates. Now the power-hungry pol has offended the liberal heart of the Democratic party. The White House wannabe is getting a cold shoulder from many friends and family of former Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan after a shamelessly self-promoting stunt exploiting his death.” Report notes Hillary announced death on Senate floor before family ready to issue a statement. NewsMax.com report again: “’That wasn’t hers to announce, it was classless,’ a family representative told U. S. News & World Report. A few more tactless blunders such as that and Hillary’s ascent to the presidency won’t be as easy as she hopes.”  4/13/2003

Time to start Iowa Pres Watch 2008? While Iowa Dems continue X-raying the current crop of wannabes, Paul Bedard in this week’s “Washington Whispers” in U. S. News & World Report writes: “With Republicans expecting President Bush to roll to reelection in 2004, their focus is fast turning to 2008 and whom the GOP will run against expected Democratic nominee Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. Now, Whispers is told that Florida Gov. Jeb Bush looks strong. ‘If Jeb is in the mix’ for the nomination, says a top GOP official. ‘it’s his.’” (Iowa Presidential Watch, 4/15/2003)

… Under the heading “Hillary’s guns,” John McCaslin in yesterday’s “Inside the Beltway” column in the Washington Times wrote: “Hoping to bank on the successful campaign style of Hillary Rodham Clinton, two of the leading 2004 Democratic presidential contenders have hired two of the nation’s top media consultants for their campaigns. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut has snagged Democratic strategist Mandy Grunwald, who was not only media adviser and director of advertising for the 1992 Clinton-Gore campaign, but later designed strategy and ads for Mrs. Clinton’s Senate campaign in 2000. (We recall Ms. Grunwald commenting in advance of the 1996 presidential campaign that it would be a difficult chore for Republicans to unseat President Clinton because ‘Bob Dole has been Newt Gingrich’s Siamese twin’ for too long. Today, it’s a long caravan of Democratic candidates on a tough road to recapture the White House, given President Bush’s impressive victory in the war to oust Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, his strides in fighting terrorism, and high popularity numbers among Republicans and Democrats alike.) Meanwhile, Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina has hired David Axelrod and Associates to be his lead media consultant. Chicago-based Axelrod similarly handled media for Mrs. Clinton’s Senate campaign.”    (4/19-20/2003)

Hillary would lose to GWB in NY. Headline from Quinnipiac University poll released yesterday – “Bush Edges Clinton, Tops All Comers in New York, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; But Most Voters Say She Should Stay In the Senate” Poll results show Hillary has a 52-36 approval rating in NY state – but GWB would beat Hillary in her adopted state 47-44 if election held now. (Iowa Pres Watch Note: Those are just the NY numbers—where Hillary was elected to the Senate in 2000. Does anyone even want to guess what the outcome of a Bush-Hillary matchup in Wyoming, Alabama or Texas might look like in 2004? Smart money says, however, she’s still 2004 v.p. contender and/or the Dems’ designated Bush critic.)(4/25/2003)

Mark June 9 on the campaign calendar. That’s the day both the printed and audio versions of Hillary’s long-awaited book – her “complete and candid account” of her White House days for which she got an $8 million advance from Simon & Schuster – is scheduled to hit the market. The 576-page book is titled, “Living History” and – according to amazon.com – the list price will be $28.  Drudge Report does comparison – showing Hillary’s “Living History” title and Katherine Graham’s “Personal History” title.  (4/29/2003)

Hillary – appropriately sharing the stage with actor-comedian Chevy Chase – told more than 1,500 Connecticut Democrats the Bush administration has the worst economic policies since Herbert Hoover with no real plan to end the nation’s fiscal troubles. Hillary, who was more than an hour late for the annual Jefferson Jackson Bailey dinner in Southington, delivered a wide-ranging address with a key central theme – GWB can do no right. From the Hartford Courant coverage: “’I am sick and tired of people who call you unpatriotic if you debate this administration’s policies,’ Clinton shouted as the crowd screamed its approval. ‘We are Americans. We have the right to participate and debate any administration.’…She then accused the Bush administration of having the worst economic policies since Herbert Hoover, abandoning the middle class through tax cuts to the rich, secretly plotting to eliminate public education and ‘letting Medicare die on the vine.’” From AP coverage of the Hillary speech: Clinton saidan increasing number of Americans are unhappy with Bush’s policies. ‘There is an unease…People know better than what they hear and what they see.’”(4/30/2003)

… Also from the AP coverage of the Southington event: “Numerous protestors with different causes showed up. Some were escorted out by Democratic officials and Southington police during Clinton’s speech and another talk by Sen. Joe Lieberman’s wife, Hadassah. They protested what they say is the killing of Iraqi and Palestinian children. ‘Hillary’s killing babies,’ some shouted. In addition, 30 protestors outside criticized Lieberman, D-Conn., as being little different from Bush. ‘Bush-Lieberman 2004. GOP Dream Team,” one sign read.”(4/30/2003)
