                               QUOTABLES:
"It's hard to do the Electoral College calculation and not figure that
if Kerry can't win Pennsylvania, he can't win the presidency,"
says G. Terry Madonna, a professor
at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., and director of the
          statewide Keystone Poll.
          (8/30/2004)
"We can't stand here without looking behind and seeing the skyline of
the greatest city in the world missing something that meant so much to
us, those two towers and all those people that we lost,"
former New York City Mayor Rudolph
          W. Giuliani said.
          (8/30/2004)
"So, throughout this week, as all Americans, we'll remember them, and
we'll remember the support President Bush and Vice President Cheney
gave us through those terrible and difficult days,"
          Giuliani said. "No one has
been more steadfast than the president and vice president."
          (8/30/2004)
"You cannot show weakness in this world today because the enemy will
          exploit that weakness," President
Bush said. "It will embolden them and make the world a more
          dangerous place."
          (8/30/2004)
When asked by Today Show host Matt
Lauer, "Can we win?" the war on terror, Bush said, "I don't
think you can win it. But I think you can create conditions so that
the — those who use terror as a tool are — less acceptable in parts of
          the world."
          (8/30/2004)
"His [Sen. John Kerry]critics are saying, 'Look, you made it fair game
          [Kerry’s military service],' " Sen.
John McCain said. "I mean, that's very legitimate, and I think
there's a risk that he took when he made it such a centerpiece. He may
be paying a very heavy price."

                      Who?
          Hot on

Drudge: John Kerry’s two daughters showed up for the live MTV
Music Video Awards in Miami to voice their appeal to the young crowd
to vote for their father for president. However, the crowd jeered and
boo’d the duo – even louder when the ‘vote for our dad’ appeal was
          made.
          Who’d a thunk it??

A USA Today/Gallup/CNN poll shows Kerry losing ground to President
Bush going into the GOP Convention in New York City this week.
          In Pennsylvania, Bush and Kerry each had 47% of likely voters;
independent Ralph Nader was at 2%. Among battleground states,
Pennsylvania is second only to Florida in number of electoral votes,
with 21. Gore carried the state by 5 percentage points.
          • In Wisconsin, Bush leads Kerry among likely voters, 48%-45%. Nader
has 4%. Gore won the Badger State. It has 10 electoral votes.
          • In Iowa, Kerry leads Bush among likely voters, 51%-45%. Nader was at
2%. Gore narrowly carried the state. It has seven electoral votes.
Kerry fared better among the larger pool of registered voters. He
leads in Pennsylvania by 49%-43%, in Wisconsin by 47%-45% and in Iowa
          by 50%-44%.
Bush is also leading in New Hampshire. Jennifer Donahue, an adviser at
the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College, said
Bush appears to have the edge because New Hampshire's economy is
improving and many of the newcomers to the state are people who have
sought refuge from Democratic president candidate John Kerry's home
state of Massachusetts because of high taxes and housing prices.
