 QUOTABLES:

"In this different kind of war, we may never sit down at a peace table. But make no mistake about it, we are winning and we will win," President Bush said. "We will win by staying on the offensive, we will win by spreading liberty." (8/31/2004)

"It was between war and a graver threat. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise," Sen. John McCain said. "Not our critics abroad. Not our political opponents. And certainly not a disingenuous filmmaker who would have us believe that Saddam's Iraq was an oasis of peace when in fact it was a place of indescribable cruelty, torture chambers, mass graves and prisons that destroyed the lives of the small children held inside their walls." (8/31/2004)

"The Bush administration miscalculated by turning its back on Afghanistan," said Sen. John Edwards. (8/31/2004)

Kerry’s plans

Sen. John Kerry will speak on Wednesday to the American Legion in Nashville, Tenn.

Kerry is also planning a rally in Ohio just before midnight Thursday evening with his running mate John Edwards and their wives. Then Kerry plans a two-day bus tour of the state.

Kerry’s campaign is dispatching his three partners to Midwest battlegrounds that Democrat Al Gore won narrowly in 2000 -- Teresa Heinz Kerry to Iowa, John Edwards to Wisconsin and Elizabeth Edwards to Michigan.

Moore is less

The Washington Times covers the story of Michael Moore’s attendance under press credentials of USA Today at the Republican National Convention. They offer a glimpse of how the press went crazy over his showing up in the press box.

The article also covers the interchange between Sen. John McCain’s reference to the Moore as a "disingenuous filmmaker."

Brokaw loses

"In a likely preview of a media obsession this week, Tom Brokaw ended Sunday's 'NBC Nightly News' by complaining that the decision to feature three 'middle-of-the-road' speakers, in contrast to the party's 'hard right' positions, may be seen by 'streetwise New Yorkers' as 'the political equivalent of a popular con game in this tough town, three-card monty,' " the Media Research Center reports at www.mediaresearch.org.

"But, Brokaw lamented, 'That's a game in which the dealer almost always wins.' "

Ugly protesters

The NY Times reports on how the protesters at the convention are confronting delegates and making trouble where they can:

When marchers approached the Garden, a police detective was knocked off his scooter. He was then repeatedly kicked and punched in the head by at least one male demonstrator, the police said.

The detective, William Sample, was listed in serious condition at St. Vincent's Manhattan

Hospital, where Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly both visited him, the police said. There was no immediate word of an arrest in the assault, but as of 9 p.m., the police said there had been 11 protest-related arrests.

MVO: “Symbols. They represent the best things about America.
Freedom … Valor … Sacrifice.
Symbols, like the heroes they represent, are meant to be respected.
Some didn’t share that respect…and turned their backs on their brothers.”

KERRY: “…renounce the symbols which this country gives… …and that was the medals themselves…I gave back – I can’t remember – six, seven, eight, nine…”

MVO: “How can the man who renounced his country's symbols now be trusted?

Kerry losing ground

Democrat political operatives are admitting that Kerry’s campaign is losing ground. Democracy Corps, a group led by pollster Stan Greenberg and strategist James Carville, said in a memo that subtle gains by Bush have tied the race again after Kerry had a slight advantage after the Democratic National Convention in late July.

"There is no doubt that the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ads (attacking Kerry's Vietnam service) have had an impact on the race," according to the Democracy Corps memo. Those attacks combined with the Summer Olympics have combined to "shift the focus away from Iraq and worrisome economic trends."

The ABC News-Washington Post poll released Monday supported the Democracy Corps findings. Bush and Kerry were tied at 48 percent apiece while independent Ralph Nader was backed by 1 percent among likely voters. They are also tied among registered voters, a larger group. The poll also showed Kerry losing ground on the issue of national security.

Kerry’s a crook

Talon News is reporting that Sen. John Kerry is guilty of taking foreign contributions:

Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates government corruption, has released declassified documents which they say shows that Democrat presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry accepted improper campaign contributions during his 1996 reelection bid. In exchange, Judicial Watch says Kerry helped arrange meetings between Chinese aerospace executives and U.S. Government officials.

The heavily redacted FBI documents show that Johnny Chung, who plead guilty to two violations of the Federal Election Campaign Act and other charges, funneled approximately $20,000 to the Clinton/Gore '96 reelection campaign and an undisclosed, smaller amount to Sen. John Kerry.

According to Newsweek Magazine, Kerry received $10,000 at the Beverly Hills fundraiser held less than one month before the election. In return, according to Newsweek, Kerry helped Hong Kong businesswoman Liu Chaohying by arraigning a meeting between Chaohying and a senior Securities and Exchange (SEC) official in order to get Chaohying's company listed on the U.S. Stock Exchange.

It was later disclosed that Chaohying was also a lieutenant colonel in the Communist China's Peoples Liberation Army. It was Chaohying who controlled a Hong Kong bank account through which the money was routed.

During the same time period, Kerry traveled to Beijing on a "U.S. trade mission organized and sponsored by a private corporation." Paul Marcus, the head of Boston Capital & Technology, traveled with Kerry on the trip.
