Holding the Democrats accountable

"He [President Bush] doesn't have much left to fight a country [like Iran] that is a danger to the United States," Democrat National Chairman Howard Dean said.

"It looks like today, and this could change, as of today it looks like women will be worse off in Iraq than they were when Saddam Hussein was president of Iraq." Howard Dean said.

"Science is science. There's no factual evidence for intelligent design. There's an enormous amount of factual evidence for evolution. Those are the facts. If you don't like the facts, then you can fight against them. The Catholic Church fought against Galileo for a great many, many centuries," Howard Dean said.

"You get America out of Iraq and Israel out of Palestine and you'll stop the terrorism," peace activist Cindy Sheehan said.

"All wisdom does not reside in nine persons in black robes," Republican Majority Leader Tom DeLay said. "The Constitution is clear on the point that the power to make laws is vested on Congress."

“These activist, unelected judges believe they know better than the American people about the direction the country should go. The framers of our great nation did not intend for the courts to have absolute and final power over us," James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, said.

"I believe I can be a viable candidate [for President], but it's too early to make that final judgment," Sen. Joe Biden said.

"I'm not leaning either way, because I'm not considering it. I really am not," Sen. John McCain said. "There's no reason to until after the 2006 elections."

"But labor's problem is not politics. Labor's problem is labor. Labor faces a crisis in confidence among nonunion workers. A poll I recently conducted on behalf of the Public Service Research Foundation found that a 56 percent majority of workers who are not organized wouldn't vote to organize -- while just 35 percent would consider doing so. And for America's organized labor movement, that's a significant problem. ...," pollster John Zogby said.

Bill Clinton’s lies

The fact that former President Bill Clinton is adverse to the truth is well documented. However, NewsMax reports that Clinton lied to the 9/11 Commission about Sudan’s willingness to hand over Osama bin Laden.

The revelation came during Commission Member John Kerrey’s appearance on WDAY radio with host Scott Hennen accroding to NewsMax:

"He told us yesterday that that was a misquote," Kerrey told WDAY radio host Scott Hennen.

Hennen shot back: "I have heard it in his own voice! I have heard him say it. I have the tape of him saying just that."

"Really?" a stunned Kerrey responded. "Well, ship it to me. Because he said yesterday that he didn't have a recollection of that."

Kerrey's response indicated that 9/11 staffers hadn't shared the Clinton audiotape with the commissioners themselves - even though NewsMax had made the audio available to the panel months before.

Centrist Guv Richardson

Illegal immigrants are finding that America’s only Hispanic governor may not be a friend according to the Wall Street Journal’s Opinion:

The politics of immigration are changing. On Friday Bill Richardson, the nation's only Hispanic governor, declared a "state of emergency" in four New Mexico border counties due to "a chaotic situation involving illegal alien smuggling and illegal drug shipments." His office has pledged $1.5 million for stepped-up law enforcement and also asked Chris Simcox, the president of the volunteer border patrol group Minutemen, for a meeting. Mr. Richardson, a man who wears his ambition for national office on his sleeve, has apparently decided he has to reposition himself on border issues.

Gingrich watch

The Gingrich Foundation has just made a monetary gift to establish the Newt and Callista Gingrich Scholarship at Luther College in Northern Iowa’s Norwegian community of Decorah.

The endowment of $25,000 will provide annual scholarships at the college, which is the alma mater of Mrs. Gingrich, who is chief clerk of the House Agriculture Committee.

The Washington Post covers his presentation on Capitol Hill last week and how he wowed the staffers:

"Speed, cleverness and shallowness are advantages for the Left," Gingrich, who stayed around to field a flurry of admiring questions, asserted on page 58 of his presentation. "They dominate the elite news media so they will always be able to launch new attacks, have their allies in the bureaucracy create new leaks and focus on analysis that hides their values." He added, "Our core pattern should be 'there is a BIG difference and it is a fact. . . .' We must then take such key facts to immediately illustrate a large vision; we cannot remain in arguments at the detail level."

MoveOn.org Sheehan vigils

MoveOn.org’s latest e-mail asks supporters to hold candlelight vigils for Cindy Sheehan:

On Saturday, President Bush went on a bike ride. According to news reports, his schedule also included "a nap, some fishing, and some reading."1 But President Bush refused to meet with Cindy Sheehan, the grieving mother who lost her son in Iraq. Cindy is fast becoming an international spokeswoman against the war. But now, it's up to all of us to show that she's not alone in demanding answers from the president.

Cindy has asked supporters to start candlelight vigils in our communities to remind people of the terrible price of war. So, MoveOn, TrueMajority and Democracy for America have teamed up to organize nationwide "Vigils for Cindy Sheehan" (and for all military and gold star families) on this coming Wednesday, August 17th, starting at 7:30 PM local time.

Since Saturday, folks have agreed to host close to 300 vigils, but we need to do better than that. Hosting a vigil doesn't take much time, but it'll offer lots of people in your community a way to connect. We've prepared a kit that walks you through exactly what you need to do. Can you host a vigil in your community?

The e-mail continues on with a message from Sheehan:

Here is what Cindy said about the vigils: "I invite mothers everywhere to stand up with me so that no more of our sons and daughters lose their lives for a war based on lies and deception. Join me in demanding the truth—and an end to the war—by organizing vigils across the country, before one more mother's child is lost."

If you're an Iraq veteran, or a family member of a soldier, it'd be especially meaningful for you to join us. Bring a photo of your loved one to remind all of us what is at stake. Two great organizations, Gold Star Families for Peace and Military Families Speak Out, are leading the way to make the voices of military families heard loud and clear. Thousands of people are already doing a lot—organizing events and more—to help bring Cindy's stand to communities across America. Will you help too?

Hosting a vigil is really simple. All you have to do is choose the location, invite some friends and get some candles. If you can't host, it's really easy to attend one—just RSVP, get some candles and show up.

These vigils aren't rallies or places to give long-winded speeches. They are moments to solemnly come together and mark the sacrifice of Cindy and other families. We're asking people to gather for just a half hour or so. We've put together an easy way for you to sign-up to host a vigil or attend one. Once you register your vigil, we'll invite other MoveOn members in your community to join your vigil.
